Officiel contests for mares and foals
The officiel contests are organized by the two regional studbooks (the FBBD and the EWCTB). The FBBD organises them for the Flemish provinces, the EWCTB for the Walloon provinces. Every year each province has an officiel contest for colts of 1 year old and mares up to 10 years. These contests are prereserved for the members and horses which are registered in the studbook. Besides mares of six year must have at least one foal registered, and mares of eight year at least two.
At these contests the mares are classified by quality and they get a first or second category (marked with I or II in the results). Mares which receive a first category, can participate at the yearly national contest (the Belgian championship). In fact, these officiel contest are """"pre-selections""".
The jury-members are the so-called 'officiel jury-members' which are chosen every three year by the general board of the studbook.
National contest - Belgian Championship
All mares who obtained a first category and all licensed stallions can participate at the national contest. All horses who win and the winners of the previous year, can compete at the championship at the end of the day. Every year a champion-mare and -stallion are indicated and two reserves.
The first national championship took place in 1886, these days the contests were extraordinary popular. There were special trains from all angles of Belgium to bring people to the Cinquantenaire in Brussels, but also the horses were transported those days by train! Up to the sixties the national championship was organised in June and spread out over three days.
Stallion expertise
Every year, generally in November, the national stallion expertise takes place. Here the stallions get approved or refused. Only foals of licensed stallions can be registered in the studbook.
